Write a book now - get started today

Want to write a book?

Many people do, if my Inbox is any indication. I get at least ten email messages a week which start by saying either: “I want to write a book…” or “How do I write a book?”

If you’d like to write a book too, here’s what I tell my correspondents: GET STARTED.

Write one word, and another one. And another. Don’t stop.

Sooner or later, you’ll have a lot of writing that’s book length.

Put the material away for a month or two.

Then read it. Just read it straight through, as though you’d never written it.

Next, ask yourself: What is this book about? Summarize your book in one sentence.

Maybe your book’s about too many things: you may have written parts of five books.

OK, choose ONE thing that your book’s about and carve all the material that’s relevant to that one thing from the rest.

Now write again - remembering your sentence of WHAT YOUR BOOK IS ABOUT.

By the time you finish this round of writing, you’ve got an initial draft of your book.

Angela Booth’s writing guides have been created to help you to make money from your writing every day. Join the thousands of writers who are making great money with their writing skills.

You haven’t finished. Write at least one other draft, before you show the material to anyone.

So, what are you waiting for? Get started. Writing a book is pretty mechanical in essence: get the words written.

In the process, you’ll change. You’ll learn how writing works, and if you keep writing, your book will turn you into an author.

Either with this book, or your next book, you’ll become a published author. But it all starts with putting one word after another one.

Why not write a twistery?

Above - the twiller - a thriller on Twitter, here’s the plot summary.

Want to write a book, fast?

Books on blogs are common, but there’s no new form of book-blogging: book micro-blogging, on Twitter. The excerpts above are from Michael Richter’s “twiller“.

Introducing the Twiller - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com reports:

“Recently, a handful of creators (present company included) have scrapped pen and paper for mobile phone and keypad, and started texting their novels — in real time, just a few characters at a time. Our medium is Twitter, a service that lets you broadcast bursts of 140 characters at a time to be read by people who subscribe to get your updates.”

So, if you’re writing a mystery, you could write a twistery on Twitter… a Twitter romance would be a twance… :-)
Try it: you’ve just eliminated your “I haven’t got time to write a book” excuse. You can write your book 28 words at a time.

Get an agent for your book

You’re writing a book, and you realize that at some stage, you need to get an agent.

But when’s the best time?

I’ve had several agents over the course of a long career, and here’s an essential truth: agents are BUSY. Their time is reserved for their clients.

This means that the best time to get an agent is when you’ve already won the interest of a publisher. An agent handles your literary business, and many agents will be interested when someone wants to publish your book.

A literary agent’s role is a business role

Your agent’s role is strictly a business role of negotiating contracts. So until you have an offer, you don’t need an agent. In fact, an agent may do you more harm than good. You’re the only person who knows what you can write, and what your goals and aspirations are.

Write, educate yourself on the world of publishing, and promote yourself and your writing.

Read “How to write your book the easy way” to discover an easy way to promote yourself, and to get an agent too.
